My book on Robert Schumann and his music has a title rather difficult to translate. In Danish the word "Forrykt" means mad, insane, and insanity is a well-known part of the Schumann tragedy. The word, however, also means "displaced" in Danish, thus characterising an original and rarely observed aspect of Schumann's music: The way he often displaces elements of rhythm and phrasing expected to have a fixed place in musical grammar, thus stirring and renewing our experience of musical time.
